Joy in My Sleep

One of my new spiritual disciplines I've been trying is to pray through a Psalm a few times a day. Today it was Psalm 149 and one phrase really stuck out in verse 5: "Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds." How crazy is that!
It reminded me of a section of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's book "Life Together", where he talks about the ancient's understanding that we are most vulnerable when sleeping. Bonhoeffer uses this to urge us to pray for protection during the night. While I agree, we can't ignore that Psalm 149 urges us to do something quite unique, to sing for joy on our beds. Our life should be such an outpour of joy that even on our beds, in our most vulnerable state, we should sing for joy. God produces that kind of Joy! It is no coincidence that the verse before this reads: "For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation." What can give greater joy than our salvation.
